The major sports trifecta, which happens when 3 professional sports teams in the same region win a championship within a season of one another, is extremely rare. This achievement has occurred twice:
New York City 1927-1928: New York Yankees (MLB 1927), New York Giants (NFL 1927), and New York Rangers (NHL 1928).
Detroit 1935-1936: Detroit Tigers (MLB 1935), Detroit Lions (NFL 1935), and Detroit Redwings (NHL 1936).
Historical Trifecta Attempts
Boston
2018-2019
The Boston trifecta attempt of 2018-2019 produced the highest Trifectameter® reading ever in the modern era: 69.630%!
This achievement occurred when the New England Patriots beat the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII on February 3rd, 2019. The Boston Red Sox had already won the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on October 18th, 2018.
The Boston trifecta attempt ended when the Boston Celtics were eliminated from the NBA playoffs by the Milwaukee Bucks in the Conference Semifinals on May 6th, 2019.
San Francisco
2014-2015
The San Francisco trifecta attempt of 2014-2015 was notable for what could have been if the San Francisco 49ers had made the playoffs and won Super Bowl XLIX.
Instead, the result was a ‘bookends’ trifecta attempt with the San Francisco Giants winning the World Series against the Kansas City Royals on October 29th, 2014, and the Golden State Warriors winning the NBA Championship against the Cleveland Cavaliers on June 16th, 2015.
Wisconsin
2021
The Wisconsin trifecta attempt of 2021 gave rise to the Trifectameter®.
The Milwaukee Bucks won the NBA Championship against the Phoenix Suns on July 20th, 2021.
The Trifectameter® reading peaked at 39.601% on 10/4/2021 after the Milwaukee Brewers won the National League Central Division Championship and the Green Bay Packers were leading the NFL’s NFC North Division with a record of 3-1.
